The University of Waterloo women’s volleyball team got to tally their first win of the regular season at home on Friday night. Starting off their weekend on a high-note, Waterloo faced off against the Guelph Gryphons, who completed last year’s season seeded one spot higher than Waterloo in the Western OUA rankings.
Despite dropping the first set 22-25, the Warriors fought their way back in dominating fashion, taking the next three sets with scores of 25-23, 25-19, and 25-19 to bring home the win. Thanks to a strong offensive game with 45 kills throughout the match, the women’s team established themselves as a force to be reckoned with as they move forward with the regular season.
Third-year outside hitter Claire Mackenzie led the warrior offence with 13 kills and rookie setter Claire Gagne made a strong debut starting at her first game on home ground with 37 assists and 11 digs. Veteran middle Casey Clunas had an excellent performance with 11 kills, four blocks and three service aces.
After starting the season with two losses out west against the Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs, this win improves the women’s volleyball team record to 1-2.
Moving forward with the season the Warriors face tough upcoming matches against regular powerhouses like McMaster, who took second in the OUA West division last season.
The Warriors face off against the Queen’s Gaels and RMC Paladins on Nov. 18 and 19, respectively, in PAC.
