The Waterloo women’s hockey team has been nothing short of impressive this season, as the last two games have proven. Two reasons for the team’s solid performance are their two current goalies: veteran Rebecca Bouwhuis and first-year Stephanie Sluys, who has recorded five shutouts this season.
Bouwhuis was in charge of the pipes for both of the road games, the first being against the Laurentian Voyageurs. The Warriors came back to tie that game during the final seconds of the match, pushing it to overtime and ultimately winning 2-1 in a shootout.
Julie Hebert gave the Voyageurs the lead by scoring an early goal at the 4:15 mark, but the Warriors kept the match under control for the remainder of regulation time. Bouwhuis had 28 saves keeping the Warriors in the game.
It wasn’t until the dying seconds of the third period that Kaitlyn McDonell tied the game 1-1 for the Warriors with less than 30 seconds remaining. Neither team was able to secure the game in overtime, so the game headed to a shootout where Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda gave the Warriors the win.
In their second road game, the Warriors were dominant over the Nipissing Lakers, scoring two goals in the first period, both courtesy of Rachel Marriott. During the second period, the Warriors scored another two goals, securing their second victory. Angela MacDonald and Marriott placed the Warriors up 4-0 over Nipissing.
The third period was more of the same: Hewitt-Kenda scored the fifth goal for the Warriors at the 6:42 mark. Kaley Tienhaara and Bronwyn Bolduc gave the Lakers a couple of late-game goals but it was too late for a Laker comeback. The Warriors took the game 5-2, securing four vital points from the weekend’s games.
