Winning Western student union team disqualified, losing team to take office instead

Political drama found its way to the 2015-2016 Western elections after the winning team was disqualified for violating campaign material distribution rules says the Western Gazette.

A hearing occurred March 29 after the opposing team appealed the results. The elections committee was quizzed on the integrity of its decisions when distributing demerit points, and the winning team was questioned about their campaign activities. After nine days of deliberating, the choice was made April 7 to disqualify the winning team.

The appeal board gave the winning team additional demerit points, which caused an automatic disqualification. The team’s violations included post-campaigning on social media and distributing campaign materials off-campus.
