With summer on the way, it’s time to consider what some of the athletes of UW will be up to over the course of the next term. Imprint spoke with several coaches around campus to get an inside scoop on the varsity teams and their many upcoming activities and events.

The UW men’s golf team, consisting of six players and two coaches, will be travelling to Pinehurst, N.C. April 25 for a week of practice. The trip is to prepare for the upcoming Canadian University/College Golf Championships, which will be held on Cutten Fields at the University of Guelph. The championships will take place May 26-29. On the way to Pinehurst, the Black and Gold will play Marshall University in West Virginia, a Division I school, followed by 10 rounds of golf played at some of the finest courses in North America. This has been an annual trip for the past 10 years.

UW’s competitive Nordic skiers train year-round, with the exception of a break during April. Roller skiing, running, cycling and strength exercises take place throughout the spring and summer. The team eventually meets informally over the summer and the athletes mostly train on their own, followed by attending an Ontario-wide university training camp in June.

Over the course of the next term, men’s rugby players will be playing club-level rugby which competes with other clubs (and players) from across the province, including the OUA. After two seasons of hard work, recruiting and player development, the men’s rugby team will have nearly 12 first-year rugby players joining the program with extensive playing backgrounds. A training camp for the 2015 season will be opened August 23, and the first games of the season will be held in the following weeks.

Surprisingly, the baseball team will not be participating in any UW team events over the course of the summer. This is due to all players being in summer leagues not associated with UW. The team will reconvene for training camp midway through August.
