GBDA students recognized for interactive design by Christie Awards
The Christie Design Awards — a joint recognition from Christie Digital Systems Canada, Inc. and the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus — were awarded to two teams of students from the global business and digital arts program, Feb. 28.
Students were asked to create an animation to display in Christie’s head office. Five different options for configuring the exhibit were given including a curved projection wall and a 70-inch display cube.
This annual competition not only encourages students to experiment with interactive displays but also provides cash prizes of $1,500 and $1,000 for first and second place.
First place went to Jessica Barch, Sarah Clare, Connor Ruest, Lauren Noble, and Michelle Kostka for a colourful aquatic display.
Jordan Malixi, Kitty Huang, Tani Omorogbe, Andrew Gibson, Brendon Case, and Abubakar Guled collaborated to win second place for a 3-D digital hip hop dance projection.
Third was given to Jie Zhan, Jacqueline Wong, Jennifer Rodriguez, Mara Finkelstein, and Vladislav Artym for an animated 3-D cube with different coloured light projections.

City partners up with UW, WLU, regional police for St. Patrick’s Day tent party
The City of Waterloo is teaming up with the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, the Waterloo Regional Police, and EMS to hold a St. Patrick’s Day tent party in the parking lot of the KW Granite Club, a curling rink located behind UWP.
Alcohol will be served and students will be checked for identification. The party will also be monitored by police and EMS. The tent party is intended to avoid massive street parties from happening, as was the case on Ezra Avenue last year.
“We have an action plan in place to monitor Ezra Avenue,” Megan Harris, communications director of Waterloo, said in an interview with CBC. “That’s a large increased enforcement presence between regional police, EMS, municipal bylaw enforcement, and fire services.”
Student neighbourhoods will also be patrolled throughout the day to ensure a controlled, safe environment for everyone.
