1. Canada defeats China on late penalty kick in opening game of FIFA Women's World Cup
After more than 90 minutes of frustration, team captain Christine Sinclair scored a late penalty kick during the second minute of second-half stoppage time, leading to a 1-0 win over China in the opening match of FIFA Women’s World Cup. The host country was given a penalty kick after Canadian player Adriana Leon was fouled by China's Rong Zhao. According to CBC Sports, team captain Sinclair was adamant on taking the kick and was "practicing [her] whole life for that moment." The match, which took place at Commonwealth Stadium with a sellout crowd of more than 50,000, is the first of many for Team Canada for the month-long tournament.

2. Two Canadian tourists potentially face charges after Malaysian officials blame them for earthquake
The two Canadians Lindsey and Danielle Petersen were part of a group of 10 foreigners, who posed naked atop Mount Kinabalu — Malaysia’s highest mountain peak located in the state of Sabah — on May 30. As a result, Malaysian officials are blaming them for a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that struck on June 5, responsible for taking the lives of thirteen people, as six climbers reportedly remain missing. According to the National Post, Sabah’s Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitigan said the foreigners’ actions “showed disrespect to the sacred mountain” adding there will need to be a ritual conducted to “appease the mountain spirit.” The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs are in contact with Malaysian authorities in an attempt to assist the two Canadians barred from leaving the country.

3. Ontario makes history being the first province to ban "conversion therapy" for LGBTQ children
Cheri DiNovo, MPP of the NDP, won unanimous support for her proposed legislation of the province banning "conversion therapy" for LGBTQ children and preventing medical practitioners from billing OHIP for it. The law is the first of its kind for the country and seeks more protection for the LGBTQ community than other established laws in several U.S states. According to the Toronto Star, DiNovo believes that "conversion therapy" has a negative effect on children and has even lead to a 50 per cent attempted suicide rate for the transgender community. Health Minister Eric Hoskins said that "the practice of conversion therapy has no place in Ontario, a province where acceptance, respect and diversity are our most cherished strengths.”
