The Warriors men’s volleyball team had an action-packed weekend in which they secured two wins, improving their record to 6-3. They now sit in a tie for third place with Ryerson University at 12 points. </p>
The first match of the weekend, against the Lancers, was a tough one for the Warriors, who were on their toes for most of the match.
The first set was an indication of how the match would go; both teams exchanging powerful kills while trying to excel on their defensive game. The Warriors managed to go up 7-2 early in the set. The Lancers couldn’t keep the Warriors under control, allowing them to work a 18-11 lead, finally giving the set to Waterloo with a 25-16 score.
During the second set, Waterloo worked an early 10-5 lead; however, a service ace by LancersAidan Simone would tie the set at 19 points. The Warriors were unable to secure the set mainly due to errors giving the advantage to the Lancers, who took the set 25-21.
After the close call during the second set, the Warriors came out stronger and more focused during the third set. Greg Simone would lead the Warriors with a 8-4 lead. The Warriors began to soar after their initial attack, going up 20-14, and then taking the set 25-17 with a kill by Braden Cok.
The fourth set was a bit more scrappy, with early action leading to a 10-10 tie. However, Simone would be fundamental again for the black and gold by contributing a kill that would take the Warriors to victory, making the score 17-13 in favour of Waterloo. An attack error by Cok would tie the game once more at 17 points each. The final moments of the match saw the game tied at 23 points. The Lancers seemed to be gaining a small momentum, but the Warriors were fast in shutting them down, taking the set 25-23 with a service ace from Simone and taking the match 3-1.
Overall the Warriors put away 52 kills in the match compared to Windsor’s 42. Braden Cok had 19 kills while adding four blocks. Jordan McConkey and Aidan Simone also contributed 11 and 10 kills respectively.
The Warriors would move on to face the Western Mustangs Nov. 21, blanking them 3-0, and improving their record 6-3.
