Several current and past members of represented UW’s Track and field Club represented the school at the Annual Speed River New Balance Inferno Track and Field Meet that was held at Guelph’s University on May 29-30.
The Speed River Inferno annual track and field meet is a European-style track meet that features Olympians and athletes from several countries. The event lasts for two days and it includes a variety of track and field events that include the Scotiabank Track and Field Experience, The Downtown Road Mile, and the Speed River New Balance Inferno Track and Field Meet.
The Scotiabank Track and Field Experience took place Friday May 29th and it gave the chance to 200 youngsters from Guelph schools to visit Guelph’s Alumni Stadium to learn from some of Canada's top track and field stars. The Downtown Road Mile is a one-mile road race that took place in the Guelph downtown core, starting and finishing at the City Hall and The Market Square. All ages and abilities were encouraged to participate. The Speed River New Balance Inferno Track and Field Meet is where athletes from 20 countries including 20 Olympians, competed and represented their countries.
UW fourth-year Naomi Lance finished in third place of the women’s national 200m dash finals with a time of 25.09. Former Rutgers women’s track and field standout Asha Ruth finished in first place with a time of 23.83, while Rebecca Murray from Relentless T finished in second place with a time of 24.08. First-year Kelsi Damon also competed in the Women’s 200 metre dash but didn't qualify for the finals. Fifth-year Chantel Pilon finished in 18th in the women’s national 800m dash with a time of 2:19.99.
Fifth-year Lawrence Xie finished 11th in the men’s 800m run with a time of 1:56.01. Alumni and UW track and field coach Kate Bickle-Ferth also competed in the 400m hurdle race. Jorg Ahne, an incoming Warrior representing his home country of Germany, finished 9th with a 6.76m mark in the long jump competition.
