In a week of many away games, the Waterloo men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted games against the Windsor Lancers Jan. 14 at the PAC gym.
With win percentages of .900 and .700 respectively, Windsor’s women’s and men’s teams rank second in the Western division. Both Waterloo teams share a win percentage of .273, ranking third and fourth, respectively, for the women and men.
Even against a fierce foe, the Warriors faced their opponents head-on. The girls were up first: it started tough with a first period ending in the Lancer’s favour, 24-18. Try as they might, the Warriors had a hard time catching up, almost always lagging behind by more than 10 points. By halftime, the score was 48-28 Lancers, and by the third quarter it was 67-47.
The final quarter of the women’s game had the Warriors roar back, scoring five more points than the Lancers, 13-9. Despite their best efforts, however, Waterloo lost to the unstoppable Windsor team.
30 minutes later, the boys walked onto the court. Starting strong, Waterloo kept up with Windsor: each point by a Lancer was followed by a point by Waterloo. Windsor, was only ever ahead by as little as one point or at most three. However the first quarter ended 22-21 for the Lancers.
As the game continued, Windsor pulled ahead slightly, 51-46, but again Waterloo fought back. In the fourth and final quarter, the Warriors lead by ten points. In the last 2:30 of play, however, the Lancers outscored Waterloo 12-1, finishing the game with a final score of 79-74. Lancer Mike Rocca sealed the deal at 0:00 with two free throws.
Traveling together, the men and women’s teams have since played two away games versus Western and Guelph, where both teams lost both games. The Warriors have their next game against McMaster in Hamilton Jan 24.
