Imprint Publications Chair and CEO Jesse McGinnis announces Ann Marie Shackelford as executive editor. Shackelford brings considerable experience in a higher education setting that includes teaching and mentoring a publications staff, building and directing a journalism program, and advising a print and online student newspaper.

She comes to the University of Waterloo from Bacone College (Muskogee, Oklahoma) where Shackelford was associate professor of journalism, a position that encompassed advising two student newspapers — The Baconian and Baconian Online that she directed to well-respected and decorated status. She also designed, revised and instructed all journalism curriculum.

Shackelford is well-versed in providing leadership and serving on standing committees and councils, working with students, faculty, staff, administrators, Board of Trustees, community and industry partners.

At Bacone, she launched the school’s online student newspaper and linked it to social media. Under her direction, students promoted their stories, photographs and communicated with external entities through the Baconian Online Facebook and Twitter pages — a springboard for the college as a whole to begin its social media campaign.

Shackelford became a newspaper columnist at age 16, majored in journalism throughout university, and worked at the Tulsa World (Oklahoma’s second largest newspaper) while in graduate school and covered city, county and state government.

During her extended Bacone College career, she was also director of public information, writing articles and press releases, planning and directing press conferences, and serving as the school’s media spokesperson.

Shackelford earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Journalism) and a Master of Science (Language Arts – Journalism) from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
