The men’s basketball team’s Nov. 22 game began with a tribute to the late Alex Foto, a member of the cheerleading team who passed during the summer in a road accident. A minute of silence at the beginning of the match was held in honour of Foto’s memory. Members of the cheerleading team — wearing T-shirts that said “Forever a Warrior” on the front, and featured an angel wing logo on the back — surrounded a big “A” that was placed in the centre of the court to honour Foto’s memory.
The Waterloo Warriors were handed one of their worst losses of the season Saturday night at the PAC by the undefeated Carleton Ravens, who sit at the top of the CIS rankings. Carleton was one point short of achieving a triple-digit win over Waterloo, handing them a 99–36 loss.
During the first period, Waterloo was held scoreless until the 2:34 mark when Jaspreet Gill managed to score the first and only bucket of the period for the black and gold, making it 24–2 by the end of the first.
The second period saw the Ravens continue to establish their dominance over the Warriors, hitting a three-point shot right on their first offensive try. Carleton continued to truck over the Warriors with another set of threes, burying any Warriors hope to remount. At the 8:09 mark, the Ravens had a 30-point lead over the Warriors, who couldn’t seem to find the basket. UW’s forward Mike Pereira led a 10-point run during the middle of the second period, but that was the only offensive outburst the Warriors could manage before half-time. Carleton put an end to Waterloo’s streak by calling a timeout and freezing any remaining Warriors attempt. The Ravens kept the Warriors under control for the remainder of the period, making it 48–12 by the halftime mark.
The halftime featured a special routine by the Waterloo cheerleading squad in honour of Foto.
The second half wasn’t very different, Carleton kept their dominance over the Warriors. The Ravens outscored the Warriors with 27 points, while Waterloo only managed to score 11 points of their own. Defensively, the Warriors were unable to keep up with the impressive basketball Carleton was playing, even when most of the half was played by the newer Carleton players.
The match ended with a 99–36 loss for the Warriors, who now sit at 1–5, while Carleton remains 6–0. Bradley Spera led the Warriors with seven points.
