Barely beaten for bronze as Warriors play for back-to-back medals

Playing for their second consecutive OUA bronze medal Oct. 30 at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London, Waterloo’s women’s field hockey team fell short in a mere 1-0 loss to the Western Mustangs.

Although the game was played between two evenly-matched teams, the Warriors had some chances in the early minutes that they couldn’t convert on. Mustangs’ Tamara Evans was the only player in competition who was able to make a dent in the score, which went on to be the game-winning point.

“I am extremely proud of our girls’ efforts this year. We battled every single game but just didn’t get the bounces needed in today’s bronze medal match to close out the season on a high note,” said head coach Maria Leahy, reported by UW Athletics.

To start the weekend, the Warriors found success in their quarter finals match against the Queen’s Gaels with a close 1-0 win. The following day, the Warriors competed closely with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in the first half of their semifinals match, but had no response to the four goals scored in the second half; going down 5-1.

For the second time in back-to-back seasons, Warriors’ Hilary Neeb was named OUA goalie of the year due to her superior 2.83 goals against average. Her strong play rightfully earned her recognition as an OUA all-star as well. Waterloo midfielder Jenna Remedios, who performed well throughout the season, joined her teammate as an all-star as well.
