<strong>Men’s Olympic hockey team selected, with some controversial choices</strong>
Hockey Canada announced the Sochi 2014 Olympic men’s hockey team Jan. 7. The team has 11 returning players such as forward Corey Perry from Anaheim and goalie Roberto Luongo from Vancouver, with Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins leading the team.
Newcomers include defenceman P.K. Subban from Montreal and forward John Tavares from the New York Islanders. Team Canada has been slotted into Group B along with Austria, Norway, and Finland; their first game is scheduled for Feb. 13 at 9 p.m. Sochi time (noon EST).
Notable snubs include Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis, Piladelphia’s Claude Giroux, San Jose’s Joe Thornton, and Carolina’s Eric Stall.
<strong>Chan, Virtue and Moir joined by an array of new Olympic figure skating hopefuls</strong>
In other Olympic news, the Canadian figure skating team was announced Sunday, Jan. 12. Patrick Chan and ice dance team Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are notable faces on the team, with Chan being a reigning world champion and Virtue and Moir being two-time world champions and defending Olympic champions.
There are also newcomers to the team like Kaetlyn Osmond, and Liam Firus. Figure skating events begin on Feb. 6, a day before the official opening ceremony.
