<strong>Warriors smacked down by Gryphons</strong>
The Warriors were handed a lopsided 0–5 defeat by the Guelph Gryphons to start off 2014.
The Gryphons dominated the entire game outshooting the Warriors 11–29. The Warriors were able to stay in the game after the first period allowing only one goal by Gryphon’s left-winger Rachael Cassidy.
But the Gryphons proved to be too much for the Warriors in the second period and were able to tack on two more goals increasing their lead to three while being outshot 10–2.
The Warriors were never able to come back from this deficit and allowed two more goals in the period. Waterloo goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis was pulled after allowing her fifth goal finishing her night with 22 saves on 27 shots.
The Gryphons were led by goalie Stephanie Nehring who earned her fifth shutout of the season and rookie forward Marcie Landman who had two goals.
Unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to bounce back in their next game, losing 3–4 against the Brock Badgers.
<strong>Women’s volleyball swept by Queens Gaels</strong>
Queen’s Gaels overpowered the Warriors sweeping them in three sets.
The Warriors made their way to Kingston on Saturday to face the 5–4 Queen’s Gaels. The 2–9 Warriors had hopes of ending their six-game losing streak facing a Queen’s team who had lost their last two games.
The Warriors held their own in the first set but sadly lost it 16–25. From that point forward the Warriors were unable to gain any momentum and were dominated 11–25 in the second set. The Gaels wrapped up the match by winning the third set 16–25.
The three-set sweep extended the Warriors’ losing streak to seven games.
Queen’s middle Shannon Neville led both the Gaels offence and defence putting up 12.5 points on 10 kills and two service aces while also making 15 digs.
Waterloo’s Gillian Henderson was great defensively with 14 digs, but Waterloo’s offence could not get it going throughout the match.
The Warriors will try once more to end their losing streak this Friday in St. Catharines when they face the Brock Badgers.
<strong>Women’s basketball loses two to Lakehead in a double header</strong>
The Warriors women’s basketball team travelled all the way to Thunder Bay to face the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a double header matchup.
Going into this weekend the Warriors have lost their last six games. The struggles only continued last weekend as they dropped both games to Lakehead.
In the first game the Warriors fell 89–60 as they had no answer for Jylisa Williams who broke down the Warriors’ defence for an incredible 39 points going 14-for-21 from the field while dropping 11 free throws.
The Warriors held their own in the first quarter only down one point with a score of 18–19 but the Thunderwolves dominated the second quarter holding Waterloo to only 12 points while scoring 23. They never looked back from there winning by a 29-point landslide.
The Warriors did not fare any better in the second game as their defence continued to let Lakehead players score with ease inevitably losing 87–59. Williams led the way for the Thunderwolves once more with 17 points while Ayse Kalkhan chipped in 14 points in the win.
Waterloo guards Kristen Osborne and Madison Behr led the way offensively in both games. They combined for 22 points in the first game and 21 in the second.
