<strong>Cambridge students capsize in canoe</strong>
On Tuesday morning, a group of 40 students and their teacher, who were canoeing on the Grand River in Cambridge for a school trip, nearly lost five people when one canoe capsized, says <em>The Record</em>. Two of the students fell into the water when the canoe overturned south of The Footbridge. The students, along with the teacher and two other students who came to the rescue, drifted towards the western shore of the river. On the shore, the teacher called 911 when everyone was out of the water. Firefighters launched an airboat to search for them and brought them back safely to the boat launch. The students and teacher were taken to Cambridge Memorial Hospital following their rescue.
<strong>Two-vehicle crash leaves child seriously injured</strong>
Around 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, a collision involving a car and a van on Mercer Road., Cambridge left a young child seriously hurt, says <em>The Record</em>. Mercer Road. was closed to traffic between Galt Avenue. and Thunderbird Drive. The car was coming out of a parking lot on Mercer rd. when it collided with a passing van causing the car to accelerate into the sidewalk. The car struck a 6-year old girl on the sidewalk and dragged her for a short distance before striking a house nearby. The driver of the car was a 33-year old Cambridge woman who has been charged with careless driving. The young girl is currently in the hospital receiving treatment.
<strong>Wellesley school locked down</strong>
Around 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon, students approached staff at Wellesley Public School to tell them that they had seen a man walking outside the school carrying a gun. This caused the school to go into “hold and secure” mode, says <em>The Record</em>. The report brought a heavy police presence to Wellesley Public School. The shut down lasted until 4 p.m. Students were kept inside and nobody was allowed to enter or leave the school. Waterloo Regional Police officers did not find anyone with a firearm in their possession after searching the building, streets, and parkland near the school.
<strong>Don Frigo, Toronto construction exec, shot near Clinton</strong>
On Saturday, Sept. 13 a man was shot in the Hullett Wildlife Conservation Area in Clinton where he and his wife were training dogs on horseback, says <em>CBC News.</em> The victim was killed and his wife, who was badly injured, managed to escape. Investigators say that a male stranger approached the couple and fired shots. The victim has now been identified as 70-year old Donnato ‘Don’ Frigo, the vice president at Hady Construction Group in Etobicoke.
