<strong>Gryphon’s spoil Bertoia’s debut</strong></p>
The men’s football team started 2015 much like recent seasons. In their season opener — and the much anticipated debut of new head coach Chris Bertoia — the Warriors were at the wrong end of a lopsided 78-7 loss at the hands of the Guelph Gryphons.
James Roberts, the Gryphon’s quarterback, threw for 325 yards, collecting three touchdowns. Last season’s Yates cup finalist, Jacob Scarfone, caught two of those touchdowns and made eight catches for 201 yards. The lone bright spot for the Warriors was the performance of defensive back Jordan Hoover, who recorded a fumble recovery, an interception, and three tackles.
Ravens shut out the Warriors in Ottawa
The Carleton Ravens dominated the Warriors 57-0, bringing back memories of the lopsided loss they suffered at home last season at the hands of the Ravens.
The Raven’s Jahvari Bennett shone in the contest as he rushed for 70 yards while collecting three first-half touchdowns. Although Bennett’s individual performance stood out, the real star of the game was the Raven’s defensive unit. They kept pressure all game on Warrior quarterback Lucas McConnell, holding him to 12 completions and 171 yards on 32 attempts.
The silver lining for the Warriors was the solid performance of their linebacking corps. Despite the one-sided, high-scoring affair, Brandon Corelli and Brendan Conway led the Warriors with six tackles each.
Despite loss, the Warriors are heading in the right direction
On paper, a 47-24 loss at the hands of Queen’s Gaels on the road seems like another hit to a team that has kicked off the 2015 season with a 0-3 record. However, the loss showed signs that the football program’s rebuild is finally starting to pay dividends.
At the half, the Warriors trailed the Gaels by only a touchdown, before Queen’s pulled ahead with a 25-point third quarter.
Despite the loss, Warrior quarterback Lucas McConnell had a career game, throwing for 423 yards and two touchdowns.
